ENHANCING SAFETY, REDUCING CONGESTION, AND PROVIDING PEDESTRIAN AND CYCLIST ACCOMMODATIONS

Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority (CCRMA), in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Cameron County, and the City of San Benito, is proposing to widen and reconstruct FM 1846 (Oscar Williams Road) from Business 77 to San Jose Ranch Road in Cameron County, Texas.

Project Highlights

The scope of the proposed project would include widening 1.62 miles of the existing two-lane rural roadway to four lanes within a proposed 140-foot-wide right of way (ROW). The proposed 82-foot-wide roadway would consist of four 12-foot-wide travel lanes, a 14-foot-wide continuous left turn lane, two 10-foot-wide shoulders, and a 10-foot-wide shared use path on one side of the roadway. Drainage would be handled by roadside ditches. An asphalt overlay would be included as part of the proposed project. Approximately 0.1 miles of incidental construction would occur north of San Jose Ranch Road to ensure proper roadway transition. The proposed project is anticipated to require 6.95 acres of new ROW. The proposed project would involve an action in a floodplain. No wetlands or Section 4(f) properties are anticipated in the project area.

The project is located in a suburban area within the City of San Benito. The project site is surrounded by residences and some businesses. Vegetation in the area is suburban, mowed and maintained with some agricultural land. There are neither historical properties nor known cemeteries in or near the project area.

Project kickoff was held April 15, 2024 and is currently undergoing project development and public involvement.

Virtual details The virtual public meeting will be available starting on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, by 5 p.m. The virtual public meeting will consist of a pre-recorded video presentation and will include both audio and visual components.

If you do not have internet access, you may call 956-621-5573 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, to ask questions and access project materials during the project development process. In-person details The in-person open house option will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Veteran's Memorial Academy Cafeteria, 2115 N. Oscar Williams Rd., San Benito, TX 78586.
