PROVIDING INCREASED PEDESTRIAN MOBILITY AND REDUCING CORRIDOR CONGESTION

The Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority (CCRMA), in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Cameron County, and the City of Brownsville, is proposing to widen and reconstruct Dana Avenue from FM 3248 to FM 802 in Cameron County, Texas. The existing road configuration lacks shoulders, adequate barriers on bridges, and turning lanes. Vehicles turning into existing residences, businesses, or schools must slow or stop in the travel lane, leading to possible unsafe turning movements and congestion. The existing project area does not contain accommodation for pedestrians or cyclists despite the presence of three schools within the project limits.

Project Highlight

The project is being developed to improve mobility and safety, reduce congestion, and provide pedestrian and bicyclist accommodations. In order to do provide those benefits, the project proposes widening and reconstructing 2.4 miles of Dana Avenue from a 24-foot rural road to a 56-foot rural road within a usual 80-foot-wide right of way. The proposed road would include two 12-foot travel lanes, a 12-foot continuous left turn lane, two 10-foot shoulders, a 10-foot shared use path for bicyclists and pedestrians, and a 6-foot-wide sidewalk.

In-person details The in-person open house option will be held on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024 from 5:45 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Daniel Breeden Elementary School Cafeteria, 3955 Dana Ave., Brownsville, TX 78520.
Purpose The Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority (CCRMA), in cooperation with TxDOT, Cameron County, and the City of Brownsville, is proposing to widen and reconstruct Dana Avenue from FM 3248 to FM 802 in Cameron County, Texas.
Description The scope of the project would include widening and reconstructing 2.4 miles of Dana Avenue from a 24-foot rural road to a 56-foot rural road within a usual 80-foot-wide right of way. The proposed road would include two 12-foot travel lanes, a 12-foot continuous left turn lane, two 10-foot shoulders, a 10-foot shared use path for bicyclists and pedestrians, and a 6-foot-wide sidewalk. Drainage would be provided by a storm drain system. The project would include right turn lanes at major intersections and schools. A 120-foot-wide ROW is proposed at a new bridge over the Resaca del Rancho Viejo, and at the existing bridge over Cameron County Drainage District’s Ditch #1 to improve approaches. In addition, approximately 300 feet of incidental construction would occur within existing right of way south of FM 802 to ensure proper intersection alignment. A total of 7.97 acres of proposed right of way would be required for the project.

Although additional right of way would be required, no residential or non-residential structures are anticipated to be displaced at this time. Information concerning services and benefits available to affected property owners and information about the tentative schedule for right-of-way acquisition and construction can be obtained from the CCRMA by calling (956) 621-5571.

No impacts to wetlands or Section 4(f) properties are anticipated. Section 4(f) properties are protected public-owned lands including parks, recreation areas, wildlife/waterfowl refuges and/or historic sites. The proposed project would involve an action in a floodplain.

Any environmental documentation or studies, any maps and drawings showing the project location and design, tentative construction schedules, and other information regarding the proposed project are on file and available for inspection Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the CCRMA office at 3461 Carmen Ave., Rancho Viejo, TX 78575.
