Second Access Update

Cameron County, TX – We now have more information on the second access project coming to South Padre Island.
The Cameron County Regional Mobility Authority (CCRMA) has been working on a second causeway on the northern end of the island since 2008.The project is still undergoing environmental clearance from regulatory agencies.

This is a phase the CCRMA has no control over. CCRMA Executive Director Pete Sepulveda expects that clearance somewhere in the next 12 to 15 months.

If funding is available, the construction may begin as early as the next 18 months.

We asked the CCRMA what the latest is on the project.

“We’re working with our consultant to finalize the scope so that we can proceed in modifying the schematics we have, modifying the environmental studies, also working with land conservation funds… and trying to acquire as much right of way as we can” says Sepulveda.

Some of the changes to the proposed causeway is building 2 separate structures as opposed to one large causeway.

Prior to changes in the schematics, the project was estimated at 700 million dollars. Sepulveda says with ongoing changes that may be brought down by about 20%.
